The “Patounes” soapmaking industry at Kerkyra anticipates its proclamation as preservable
MOnuMENTA

The last soapmaking industry that employs traditional techniques of soap making is located on the island of Kerkyra, at the area of Avramiou, lost in or stifled by the dense and vulgar building of the surrounding area.

This article is about the Soapmaking Industry of PATOUNES, which was constructed at the end of the 19th century by Patounes and Mpazakes, and, where the rooms (workroom, shop, house) and accoutrement still remain unchanged. Although this soapmaking-industry building comprises one of the few examples of the industrial architecture of Kerkyra, and is of great historical, social and architectural value, it has not yet proclaimed as preservable. The relevant Public Services have made a positive proposal for its characterization, and the meeting of and the decision by the Head Council of Modern Monuments of the Ministry of Culture is awaited. Its proclamation will contribute to the building’s preservation, whereas the decision not to proclaim it as preservable will open the way to its demolition.
