UNEP and Green Economy

UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Launches Green Economy Initiative to Get Global Markets Back to Work.

The recent financial, fuel and food crises appear to be strongly linked to an unsuccessful management and focusing of markets based on extractive strategies that have caused important losses of natural capital. The Green Economy Initiative launched by UNEP and leading economists aims at re-focusing the global economy towards clean technologies and “natural” infrastructure as a way of combating climate change and achieving real growth. The Initiative is based on three pillars: valuing and mainstreaming nature’s services into national and international accounts; new employment generation through green jobs and laying out policies and market signals to accelerate a transition towards a Green Economy. This transition is likely to be succeeded through five sectors: clean energy and clean technologies including recycling; rural energy, including renewable and sustainable biomass; sustainable agriculture, including organic agriculture; ecosystem infrastructure; reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation; sustainable cities including planning, transportation and green building.
