                                                                              Paris, 28 February 2012
Dear Sirs,

ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, joins its Hellenic Section in vigorously condemning the recent vandalism to which several historic buildings of particular artistic value and historic significance in the city of Athens fell victim on 12 February 2012. It is fortunate that no lives were lost.

At a time of great hardship and difficulty for the Greek people, their historic treasurers need to be particularly safeguarded for the benefit of the present and future generations, and as a symbol of the identity and regeneration of the country.

ICOMOS calls on the responsible civic authorities to take direct and rapid action, so as to ensure the restoration of the affected buildings to their previous states, in respect of the specific historic and architectural characters of these buildings and on the basis of established national and international principles and norms for heritage conservation.

We also appeal respectfully to the national and local authorities to take all possible risk preparedness measures to prevent similar acts from recurring and to afford special protection for historic monuments and sites during these troubled times.

The Hellenic Section of ICOMOS is at the disposal of the authorities for advice and support.

Thanking you for your kind attention, I remain,

Yours sincerely

Gustavo Araoz
President  of ICOMOS
INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON MONUMENTS AND SITES
