Environment
All things around us, namely the parameters and circumstances that affect and influence us; the entirety of living creatures, the natural world and also the man-made, the society…

Nowadays much talk goes on about the natural environment and the dangers it encounters. The term has entered our lives dynamically, through words and phrases that we come across everyday, such as climate change, greenhouse effect, extreme weather conditions, water shortage, but also through the obvious destruction of the natural and built environment. The choice of this term to designate the entire complex ecosystem, part of which are the human beings, vividly states our attitude towards the whole physical world, the cosmos < Gk kosmos = ornament.

The environment is out there and we stand against it.
We are not only the perpetrators of all the criminal acts against the environment, but also mere observers of nature that suffers.
Our deeds indicate that we have only superficially realized that standing against nature as if we don’t belong in its realms, leaves our kind defenceless to a range of events, adverse to our existence.
We should remember that all that surround us is also what protects us.

Our superficial activity concerning the protection of the environment is connected to the solid events that we need to confront. Our fear stimulates us.  This activity reveals once again, even better, declares the self-centred, anthropocentric perspective towards the natural environment. Especially from the 20th century and onwards, in the so-called developed societies, the environment, animals, plants, inorganic elements, are regarded as useful resources to man, as goods for consumption.

The change of this dominant, self-regarding conception towards an enriched notion where all that constitutes environment are equivalent and complement one another, is the only way that could reverse the current condition and in due course save the environment. Respecting the environment and its biodiversity will allow its viability.
