Τhe old ottoman caserne in Kastoria
Vasilis Costopoulos, architect

This text indicates the old ottoman caserne in Kastoria, a 110 years old austere military building, which has been associated with all the 20th century war facts occured in this area. As a non declared monument, it was chosen to be demolished for the construction of the city’s new police headquarters and the final decision is still pending.

The current state of the ottoman caserne.
Greek military men in front of the caserne. This photo dates back to the first decate after liberation of 1912, as much we can judge from the uniforms and the weapons’ type (Mannlicher).
Panoramic view of lakeside areas Ntoplitsa and Ammos - Myloi, in the south of Kastoria. These regions are full of buildings today.
An abstract from Kastoria’s town plan, as it finalised with the Urban Revisioning Study in 2004. The caserne building comes with red colour and the proposed land use of the former Mathioudaki Camp can be also distinguished.
The tree-storey central part of the building with the double staircase in front of it. Projecting stripes and cornerstones are prominent.

Arched windows and axial series of wooden columns are distinguishable.
The wooden internal mansory and roof on the second floor. The signs of abantonment are obvious.
A temporary fencing of canvas indicates the prepatory works of demolishion.
