As 2011 comes to close it leaves us with many unsolved economical and social problems, not to mention physical and architectural ones too. However MOnuMENTA will continue to worry and fight the battle to save our physical and architectural environment, which is at risk, including monuments, important buildings (both listed and unlisted), as well as landscapes. Unfortunately those who are responsible for the protection of the above, due to the current economic crises, are no longer in a position to protect them and MOnuMENTA is once again faced with the statement, or indeed the question, Should we be talking about monuments now? from all directions.
We believe that under the present circumstances i.e. the safe-keeping of these monuments, is no longer a top priority and that the destruction of interesting buildings (Doxiadis’ home and the conference in Apollonio, cinemas ASTRON, PLAZA, industrial buildings MOUZAKI’s GEORGIADI’s and SAMICA) will be supported instead of being opposed. Consequently the role of MOnuMENTA and other NGOs has become even more important.
The continuous battle for architectural heritage and the provision of information about their values through conferences, open discussion, cultural cycling are the tools we are using to try to stand up to this bad situation. We at MOnuMENTA strongly believe that protecting monuments must be our first priority in order to preserve our social memory, identity and as far as possible social cohesion which are under threat due to the so called «development».
After five years of ongoing action and under the present circumstances MOnuMENTA has decided to open its doors to new members. As a non profit society, with a large number of members we will be in a much stronger position to speak out and fight for our heritage.
MOnuMENTA promises to continue its action for the protection and rational management of our physical and architectural heritage as long as possible.
