At the beginning of 1970s the architect and urban designer Constantinos Doxiadis dreamed and created a prototype settlement which was named Apollonio. It included houses, a conference centre, an open theatre, a church, gardens and his home. There, as the architect Panayis Psomopoulos wrote, Doxiadis created a symbolic settlement, a settlement where men and environment are in harmony.
Doxiadis’ home and the conference centre were demolished on the 1st of November. As soon as MOnuMENTA was informed about this we informed the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but unfortunately it was to late, the damage had already been done.
This destruction raises the question once again, how these architectural works are protected, and proves yet again, the absence of true protection and management of our architectural heritage.
