Iuav University is honoured to announce an international conference on Aldo Rossi’s book The Architecture of the city, 45 years after it was first published by Marsilio publisher. Aldo Rossi – Iuav University full professor, Pritzker Prize winner in 1990 - has been a major thinker and a prominent architect, universally aknowledged as a master.
The conference, held during 26th to 28th october 2011, is going to promote an open and wide discussion on some of the main topics addressed in the book, which was first welcomed in the most important architecture schools around the world to later influence international architectural culture, focusing everybody’s attention on the importance of architecture based urban studies.
The aim of the conference, besides recalling the specific role played by Aldo Rossi in defining a contemporary theory of architecture, is on one side to recall the original context that generated the book and on the other to consider the many legacies of such theory in a time when the very idea of city undergoes continuous change and displacement.
The papers, delivered from protagonists, witnesses and scholars of all ages, are therefore expected to address the changing relations between architecture and city after the first decade of XXI century after a deep change in the role of the architect as an interface between space and society.
Participation at the conference
The conference will schedule lectures, roundtable discussions and panels involving the participation of architects, academics, art and architecture historians, planners and scholars. The program has a double task. The first is focused on Aldo Rossi and his relation with the book. The second is to make a point on the possibility of contemporary “studies on the city”, both from the academic and the architects’ point of view.
Call for papers
The conference foresees also a call for paper for younger researchers and scholars.
The call for papers is open to scholars and researchers whose age is 40 at the end of 2011 or Phd doctor after 2005.
The main topics are:
> the cultural context for the essay; where the topic is to investigate the panorama of national and international events, meetings and readings Aldo Rossi was familiar with and influenced by at the time he began writing the text.
> mapping the readers: the diffusion the architecture of the city. Translated in many languages, published in many countries, the book ended up defining a geography which is partially coincidental with the network of cultural relations built by its author. This session aims to Investigate if we can still speak of a map of relations generated by The Architecture of the City.
> the legacy of an educator; Aldo Rossi’s first book has often been considered as a concluded theory. A more accurate and contemporary reading of the book reveals intead the seeds for multiple and open discussions concerning not only the specific world of “progetto urbano” but also landscape, relation between “new and old” , dissolution of urban hierarchies and so on. We expect proposals Especially by the younger generation of scholars we expect proposals addressing this legacy and how it was interpreted and modified across the last decades.
> Aldo Rossi and the veneto cities; “the reference for the starting point of this research is the Palazzo della Ragione in Padua and still today I could not imagine more significant example…. The introductionto the Portuguese edition of The Architecture of the city begins with these words, personally written by Aldo Rossi.
