The ethical concerns of taking funerary sculptures out of context

In March 2017 it was announced that the tombstone of Sofia Afentaki, will be removed, permanently, for preservation reasons, to the National Glyptoteque and a replica will take its place. This paper seeks to discuss the ethical concerns of removing the sculpture from its original context from a kaleidoscope of, often, contradictory, views.

Many "minor" - not prominent - monuments are in a poor condition of conservation and there is no conservation and restoration planning taking into account all these needs. Typical examples of such monuments on Serifos and Tinos indicate them. Their overall technical recording would impel the exploration and allocation of resources.

L. 3525/2007 regulates the contracts of sponsorship for cultural activities, which is a pecuniary or non-pecuniary economic benefit consisting in kind, immaterial goods or services. It is recommendable to adopt legislative changes, mainly in order to encourage public organizations and private ones to act as sponsors, for various projects like unearthing localized monuments.
