The neoclassical mansion was founded in 1858 and built to the designs of French architect François Boulanger. In 1862, the plans were modified by the architect Panagiotis Kalkos in order to abolish the amphitheater of the Senate. The construction work was completed in 1875. The building was granted by the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece to house this National Historical Museum, which took place in 1960. The building has been listed.
