Letter from MONUMENTA in favor of classifying a neoclassical building, at 9 Kolokotroni Street, in Piraeus
Athens, September 17, 2025
To Members of the KAS-KSNM
MONUMENTA supports the declaration of the building at 9 Kolokotroni Street, which is located in the oldest part of modern Piraeus and dates back to the last quarter of the 19th century, as a monument, because it meets all the conditions set by law 4858/2021.It is over 100 years old, a remarkable example of neoclassicism, with historical and urban values. It is also one of the few remaining examples of this period in Piraeus.
The building is part of the type of small-scale, single-family, ground-floor, petit bourgeois house, which is often found in the historic center of Piraeus in the last quarter of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century.Professor Manos Biris mentions characteristics of this particular type of ground-floor residence: “the facade - with the rhythmic arrangement of the windows - maintained its independence, while the doorway stood out with its own rhythmic organization, namely the two pilasters that supported a complete classical cornice”.
For all of the above, we hope that you will give your opinion in favor of its classification as a monument, preserving the historical identity of Piraeus, which has also lost the greater part of its architectural heritage. We attach the architectural documentation text of the building, which comes from the Archive of the MONUMENTA program “Recording and highlighting 19th and 20th century buildings in Piraeus”.The text has been written by the architect Ms. Stamatina Malikouti, who has studied neoclassical Piraeus and is scientifically responsible for the above program.
