Positions of MONUMENTA in the consultation made for the installation of the lift.
"Installation of a lift for people in the castle of Monemvasia"
Regarding the installation of an elevator at the Castle of Monemvasia, MONUMENTA, which has been actively participating in the protection of monuments since 2006, points out the following:
The Castle of Monemvasia is an incalculably valuable monument of architectural and natural heritage and a unique natural landscape. It is protected as an archaeological site, a historical site, belongs to a Natura area and is generally governed by an increased protection regime due to its uniqueness and any intervention in it requires special sensitivity and attention.
Studying the EIA for the installation of the lift, we notice that it is a huge intervention that will irreparably alter the unique physiognomy and beauty of the rocky castle-state and will burden its ecosystem. The entire design and construction is in complete contradiction to what the legal framework for the protection of Monemvasia provides. We consider that the construction of the elevator constitutes an insult to a rare world monument, such as the Castle of Monemvasia.
